I do not remember Peter asking whether I would be staying. I was a baby, so my contribution to the record is limited.
Mum said he stood beside the cot, looked at me for a while and asked, ‘Is she staying?’
He was three. Until then, he had been the only child and the smaller bedroom had been his. It was a reasonable question.
Mum told him I was staying for good. Peter later denied being disappointed. He said he only wanted to know where I was going to sleep.
He spent the next few years explaining that the room was still his and I had been put in it. This may have been his way of accepting the answer.
